It remains an inescapable fact that we are wherever we are, whether we like it or not, the place where we find ourselves is the place where we exist. In many people, however, there exists a desire for looking over the next hill, for peering around the corner, for finding out where the river starts and ends, where the railway line goes, where the steamer docks.
It is also true that no matter where we live and no matter how humdrum our life may seem to us, it is exotic for someone. Robert Louis Stevenson, an inveterate traveller, said that ‘There is no foreign land; it is the traveller only that is foreign.’ It is this sense of foreignness that guides our thinking in strange places, that gives us the feeling of wonder in a new city, a new country.
